Melasma

Also known as “the mask of pregnancy” due to its frequency with pregnant women, melasma is a very common skin problem that causes gray and brown patches on the face. As your Maryland and Virginia skincare experts, Tamjidi Skin Institute has extensive experience discovering and treating cases of melasma, and we want to provide that same level of care for you.

What is Melasma?

Melasma involves the development of brown or gray-brown splotches on the cheeks, chin, forehead, nose bridge, and upper lip. It is more common for melasma to appear on women's skin, with women making up about 90% of melasma cases. While it is not completely understood what causes melasma, it likely occurs when melanocytes (color-making cells) produce too much, combined with triggers like sun exposure or hormonal shifts. People with skin of color natively have more active melanocytes than those with lighter skin and are much more likely to develop melasma as well.

While there are no painful symptoms or bodily harm that come with melasma, treatment is pretty straightforward for getting rid of the appearance of these colored patches. Melasma can fade away on its own, especially when there is a specific one-time trigger like sun exposure or hormonal changes from pregnancy/birth control.
