Acne Scarring

Acne is the dreaded bane of any individual who is diligent about their skincare. Other than the frustration caused by the appearance of acne, and the long hard battle required to treat it, another vexing outcome of acne is acne scarring. We have a vast understanding and experience with acne and acne scarring here at Tamjidi Skin Institute in Maryland and Virginia, and we would love to find the right combination of treatments that work for you.

What is Acne Scarring?

Acne scars are usually caused by skin pores being inflamed with dead skin cells, excess skin oil, and bacteria, which leads to inflamed blemishes. These blemishes swell, causing the follicle wall to break and lead to scarring. Shallow blemishes usually heal quickly, but deeper breaks in the follicle wall allow the infectious material to spread out into surrounding tissue, which makes the break even deeper. Your skin forms new collagen fibers to try and repair these breaks but the repairs are rarely as flawless as your skin was before, hence, scarring.

There are two different kinds of acne scarring: hypertrophic and atrophic. Hypertrophic scarring is caused when your skin is trying to repair and forms too many new collagen fibers, which results in tissue building up and becoming a raised mass on the skin's surface. Atrophic scarring happens when there is a loss of tissue, and can form tiny but prominent holes in the skin, or larger depressed areas, similar to chickenpox scars.
